Update to New ISO Security Seal Standard

The new mechanical seal security standard (ISO 17712:2010) that was to take effect March 1, 2012, has been delayed.  U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has advised C-TPAT partners that the tamper evidence element of the requirements (Clause 6) cannot be met.

To date, no accredited independent laboratories have been willing to test and certify the seals as complying with the tamper evidence requirements.  Consequently, C-TPAT has determined that implementation of the new standard is not viable by the March 1st deadline.  C-TPAT partners will be advised when the issue has been resolved.

Certification for high security seals is attainable without the Clause 6 testing portion for ISO 17712:2010 (18 mm).  If companies decide to transition to seals that meet this part of the new ISO standard, C-TPAT advises they should request documentation to confirm the seals comply with the current testing requirements of ISO 17712:2010 (18 mm) certification.
