REARING AND EMPOWERING AMERICA FOR LONGEVITY AGAINST ACTS OF INTERNATIONAL DESTRUCTION ACT OF 2005
A final rule, effective September 28, 2009, has been issued by the Department of Homeland Security allowing States additional time to request a second extension of the date when States must comply with the REAL ID requirements.
The REAL ID ACT of 2005 prohibits Federal agencies, effective May 11, 2008, from accepting a driver’s license or identification card for any official purpose, such as entering nuclear power plants, accessing Federal facilities, boarding federally regulated commercial aircraft, etc. unless the license or card has been issued by a State that is meeting the requirements set forth in the Act.
Without the requested extension, States must issue REAL ID-compliance licenses by January 1, 2010.
