Cargo Crime Increases Over Holidays

According to FreightWatch, a logistics security service, cargo crimes increase over holidays. Long holidays provide criminals with excellent opportunities to target and steal goods before the product is discovered missing. Holiday weekends are notorious for high volumes of cargo theft, especially at terminal and drop yards where loaded trailers are parked for long periods. Additionally, holidays can cause long delays for drivers, increasing vulnerability to in-transit loads.

For warehousing operations, FreighWatch recommends:

  • Ensure security alarm systems are functioning properly
  • Treat all alarm trouble signals as an intrusion
  • Do not rely on a backup system (cellular/radio)
  • If primary alarm fails, assign a security officer to patrol facility exterior or have a member of management remain at the facility

For in-transit operations:

  • Drivers should remain vigilant and maintain communication with dispatch when stopped
  • Loads should not be dropped or left unattended
